Into the Woods- Urban Set

Preliminary concept design for Into the Woods. The idea is that the forest/fairytale world and the city are melding together. The trees are made from metal pipes and airducts. The shrubs are chain-link fence and trash. The apron and areas downstage are more mundane, like in a home. The stage extension is disguised as boxes and trash cans. The floor is painted to look like forest paths and a pond. Little bits of the fairy tales are in the set, such as bricks turning into the gingerbread house, the apples beginning to grow, the roses growing from electrical wires, the owl in the tree, etc. The graffiti is fairy tale inspired: the wolf paw, the monster art, etc. The street signs in the back harken to the signs in Disney's Alice in Wonderland that point in every direction, making you lost in the process of trying to follow them. To disguise the side doors in the audience while the set is the forest, construction mesh will roll over them like vines. Wagons for pieces such as Granny's house, the openning scenes of Acts I and II, and the beanstalk are not shown. Micron pen and Tombow marker on watercolor paper.
